George Floyd
…and the Twin Cities Uprising
This is not an unprecedented time in American history. The journey here has been insidiously and blatantly propelled by the terroristic inequities of racism. Not only have black Americans never received the reparations promised as a result of slavery and war, we also have not received so much as an apology for the degradation of our bodies and minds for centuries. While we in Minnesota are saying the name of George Floyd, the man who died with a white police officer’s knee upon his neck, we are also recognizing and responding to the symbology of suffocation we live through on a daily basis.
We notice sweeping fundraising efforts for businesses and buildings, but are lacking in immediate and direct financial support for individuals. Just as much as we police the black spirit’s body, mind and actions, we also have a tendency to police financial relief through filters of further oppression.
If everything in your life was burning, physically and metaphorically, would you have time to fulfill an application? Or even respond to an inquiry about your safety when it is so obvious you are on fire?
For the love of planet earth, we all need to get real about what we see and the inhumanity of it all.
And if you are a black American, come forth with your long-held truth. Seek direct payment from the very white and non-black people in your lives who run organizations and put Black Lives Matter sign posts in their yards. Tell them you are a refugee in the very nation you built. Tell them you are endangered and just as beautiful as any other bird. Just as worthy of protection. Tell them put their money where their mouth is, or divest from them.
And contact us. We’re doing our best to get funds directly into the hands of Black Twin Citians. Because we know the economic truth of what it takes to live here. Especially now.
If you are a business or person with any power, do your part. We do not care in what sector you fall. We do not care what you had planned this week, month, or year. Black liberation. Or there will be no peace for our planet.
